As noted on the Education Studies (EDS) web site, UCSD supports the goal of equity and educational excellence for all K-12 students in our public schools. This goal is actualized through the academic and field components of EDS programs. Students are asked to examine their teaching performance in relationship to the diverse social, cultural, economic, and political context of California public schools. One of the UCSD programs that pays special attention to educational equity is called CReaTE (Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment, and Teaching Excellence).
As noted on the CREATE web site:
One of the major challenges facing universities is the need to increase the number of underserved, low-income youths who are eligible for admittance to college. While numerous efforts have been made to address this problem, an easy solution has proven elusive. What has become clear, however, is that we as a society cannot expect to boost the numbers of underrepresented youths in our colleges without focused efforts to prepare these students academically in their pre-college years.
CREATE is Addressing This Challenge by:
* Forming collaborations between UCSD and local elementary and secondary school districts
* Offering the highest quality of education to 700 students at our on-campus model school - The Preuss School
* Conducting research on improving educational opportunities
* Offering innovative teacher education and professional development opportunities for local educators
The CREATE approach enables the university to bring its most vital resources - faculty and students - to support local schools and school districts. Faculty help to introduce the latest innovations in learning and test their effectiveness. UCSD students act as tutors, mentors, and role models for K-12 students, providing a constant reminder that ethnic or economic circumstances are not an obstacle to receiving the best possible education.
Under the auspices of CREATE, UCSD evaluates the effectiveness of its partnerships, model school and outreach efforts and is targeting faculty research efforts in educational areas such as the achievement of high academic standards, the best practices for educating underrepresented students, and closing the achievement gap among socioeconomically diverse students. http://create.ucsd.edu/Research_Evaluation/.
