Greening the University

Grand Challenge Overview

UCSD aims to become one of the greenest campuses in the nation, and a leader of civically-engaged sustainability research worldwide. There are efforts underway at UCSD, led by the new Sustainability Solutions Institute (Directed by Professor Paul Linden), to use the UCSD campus as a test bed for greening the built environment. This includes applied research aimed at reducing carbon, water, and resource footprints in existing and new buildings. The results of such research can help shape what happens beyond green by advancing current (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED) green building standards. ESI’s research in this area aims to define a dynamic, science-based system-level sustainability assessment framework that ranges from components (e.g., a solar panel) to individual buildings to an entire campus or community, drawing on entrepreneurship concepts such as technology readiness levels. ESI has a long term research vision that promises to engage students, researchers, and the community in exploring the crucial issues of how to meet societal needs, and in particular, how can we support future scientific research and educational needs in a sustainable manner.

Grand Challenge Solution

UC San Diego is taking part in America’s Greenest Campus competition, a
nationwide contest helping students, staff, faculty and alumni measure and
reduce their carbon footprints.  To win the competition, and increase
sustainability awareness, we need to motivate participation in measuring
and reducing individual carbon footprints.

It would be very helpful if professors could provide an incentive for
their students to measure their carbon footprint by assigning this 5
minute task as part of an assignment or by offering extra credit to
students who commit to various actions that reduce their carbon impact.
The competition ends October 5th so we were thinking this would be a great
first week activity for new students.  We are currently ranked 24th in the
nation and with an additional 300 carbon assessments we can become one of
the top 10 universities. Any ucsd.edu e-mail address can participate.
This is a win-win situation that recognizes UCSD’s commitment to carbon
reducing behaviors and for students to gain awareness of their
environmental impacts.
