Research Team Narrative

Bicycle Transportation in San Diego: Increasing Ridership

Academic Year

2010-2011

Overview

This team project has three components:

1. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC) has given us the assignment of creating a GIS database that will store data related to current and proposed bicycle projects in San Diego. This will enable the coalition executive director to easily access, among other things, to information requested by regional and municipal governments on the status of bicycle projects in the region. Such information will be used to determine where funds can or should be allocated. The geodatabase we create will also be used by future interns and SDCBC staff, interns, or volunteers to easily update the information when new project proposals are delivered. Additionally, it is a GIS project structure that can be duplicated in other regions.

2. Because we both intern at the SDCBC, and the office is shared with WalkSanDiego, we have access to relevant contacts in the non-profit and sustainability advocate community to seek additions to the Global ARC.

3. There are similarities in our research theses. This will enable us to do some collective research that will have real world relevance and can be provided to the SDCBC and other bicycle advocate groups.
