How do education programs affect the students in the urban environment? Access to education plays a important role in the development of a community and society in an urban environment. As a team we are using different methods of approach to examine how specific education programs in California address the growing needs of their students. Specifically, we intend on looking at the needs of the growing diversity of the current student population and how these programs address their needs. Our team will collaborate our individual research and exchange similarities and solutions to the problems we encounter in our data collection about education.
Our team plans on addressing the education system through research in the following areas (tentative):
Chi Dang - Look at teacher preparation education (specifically UCSD’s Education Studies Masters in Education and Teacher Credential Programs). Mainly, the process to how teacher educators in the program develop, implement, and assess their methods to addressing issues of equity and diversity to their pre-service teachers.
Karina Gonzalez - Look at effectiveness of language placement development program for ESL students, specifically the English Language Development Program (ELD) at Cienega Elementary in Los Angeles. Her study will address the kinds of reforms that are needed in public schools and dual-language programs. She believes that there is a flaw in the ELD placement system and her research will address the issue by providing a background of this policy in order to understand that this issue is not a recent phenomenon. She also believes that reasons for minority underachievement and low rates of Latinos attending four-year institutions stem from the elementary school level because students are misplaced in programs like ELD. She hopes that her findings help her reform the urban education system that calls for much change in the community that she grew up in.
Jonny Gose: Look into effective policies and procedures in Gompers Prep Academy, questioning the scalability of charter school practices to public education at large.
