2010-2011
Our research team has taken on the task of researching the correlation between artistic visibility and incorporation into the physical framework of the city, and quality of life. In the term “art” we are including any visible, audible, or textural element of the city that performs the function of conceptualizing and contextualizing the future, past, and present conditions of the city, for better or for worse. We are focusing on three specific artistic elements of the city, pertaining to the research of each member of our research team, and the role they serve in how citizens view the city: Music, computer simulation and rendering of the city, and architectural aesthetics. Ho Chung’s research proposal centers around green architectural and urban design aesthetics, and Fran’s project is about how music changes the perception and feel of city streets and street culture. Mine is about using computer simulation in the form of games to predict and manipulate urban outcomes. We are all interested in different ways in which the city can be represented, and with what effects for the relationship of citizens to the built environment and culture. Together, we want to analyze deeply how the city feels to its citizens, how that feeling can be changed or manipulated, and who has the power to change or manipulate that feeling. One of the primary ways to enhance the feeling of the city is through art, aesthetically, texturally, and audibly.
