Dear Students,
I want to share this wonderful update from Alex Hempton, Membership Director, San Diego Section, American Planning Association. Recall, Alex graduated form our USP program and he presented to you all in our class last quarter. Many of you joined the SD chapter of the APA and he is very happy about that. More of you should join up—its great for networking and learning the ropes in planning. Please pay special attention to what Alex says about publication in his new online journal below.

Dear Keith
We have a few exciting developments from SDAPA that I’d like to share with you and UCSD urban studies students and faculty.
Website: http://www.sdapa.org is being redesigned and should launch in the next couple months.
The Planning Journal: As part of the website redesign, our Planning Journal will switch from being an online PDF document to an interactive web magazine, allowing people to discuss and share articles. To signify this change, we are renaming the journal and are inviting name submissions. The winner will receive recognition on the new website and a free ticket to this year’s SDAPA Awards Event. Name submissions can be made at: http://www.tinyurl.com/sdapa-journal
Article Submissions: We would like to invite students to submit articles or versions of their senior papers for consideration of publishing in the new online journal. Articles should include one or two photos, and may be submitted to our editor, Asha Bleier (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)).
• Articles should be 1,200 words or fewer. Short, one-paragraph articles with interesting and concise content, bullet points for a sidebar, and letters to the editor, are also welcome. Articles should be oriented to practicing professional planners and provide salient information, methodology or insight relevant to the practice of professional planning. Photos and images highly encouraged.
• We reserve the right to edit for appropriate content, grammar and space. Once you have submitted the article, it is considered final and you will not be allowed to submit revisions.
• Photo(s)/image(s)/video(s) must be accompanied with a signed copyright agreement that gives the Chapter exclusive rights to the article and photo(s)/image(s)/video(s).
*The 1,200 word essay should be double-spaced. Margins at 1” on sides and 1.25” on the top and bottom. If you use Calibri 12-point font (the single most common font in an academic setting), this generally yields approx. 240-275 words per page—depending on vocabulary.
DesignCollab: SDAPA is now a participant on the local DesignCollab website at http://www.designcollab.org/ This website is a local central clearinghouse and blog/calendar for local design professionals, urban planners, landscape architects, and so on involved in improving the built environment. Actually, UCSD – USP might be interested in being a collaborator as part of the DesignCollab too.
Planners Night Out: Our next happy hour/mixer is Tues., March 6, 2012 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at URBN pizza in North Park. SDAPA Members are free and non-members are $10. We will provide some pizza. Drink specials will be available. Registration required at http://tinyurl.com/sdapa-0312
Finally, I just wanted to thank you for letting us speak to students last fall. We had many students sign up to become members which is great!
Thanks –
Alex
