Unsafe driving and street designs

Dear Friends,
Last month, Kenny Goldberg from KPBS came to Linda Vista to do a story on pedestrian safety issues in our community. Unsafe driving and street designs that are not pedestrian friendly, have contributed to automobile accidents that have resulted in pedestrian injuries and death. Pedestrian safety is of great concern to Linda Vistans. Linda Vista has a significant population base that relies heavily in public transportation and walking, including low-income, senior citizens and disabled residents. Last year, Bill Moran, an 82-year old resident of Linda Vista and a regular participant in our physical fitness class and congregate lunches was hit by a car and sustained life-threatening injuries. Our local schools have been asking for traffic calming measures for the purpose of slowing traffic and improving safety for children and their families. Just across from the Community Center at the Comstock and Kelly/Morley intersection, there have been a number of crashes and near misses of pedestrians. Although there have been numerous requests to address this problem, the City has not responded or has delivered inadequate solutions.

For this story, Kenny Goldberg interviewed Ken Grimes, Executive Director, Walk San Diego (http://www.walksandiego.org/), Dave Schumacher, Principal Planner at the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and Jorge Riquelme, Executive Director, Bayside Community Center (http://www.baysidecc.org/). His piece is scheduled to air this Monday, February 8th at around 5:33 AM and 7:33 AM on KPBS (89.5 FM).
