Sustainable San Diego

There is an important new initiative underway in San Diego right now. It is a collaborative effort, termed Sustainable San Diego, that has brought many people, agencies and organizations together in the quest to advance sustainability.  Below is a brief description from the Sustainable San Diego web site.

Sustainable San Diego is a collaboration of San Diego organizations that are working to provide organized and coordinated input into the development of the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) first Sustainable Communities Strategy (SCS) as part of the Regional Transportation Plan.

The SCS is required to address how the regional transportation plan and land use plans can be coordinated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks. State law requires that in developing these plans that the region look at a full range of measures to that will contribute to this goal.

Sustainable San Diego is working to identify policies and programs that go beyond simply saying that future development should be higher density “Smart Growth.” It should recognize that we need to create communities that provide homes that are affordable to the jobs in the immediate area; that there should access to good public transit, grocery stores, health care, parks, etc, in all neighborhoods of San Diego County.
